Based on Herman Raucher's book, the Summer of 42 is one of the 70s films that is a truly deep romance filled with seduction and innocense. America is at war that will change the country to its core. A New England beach colony lives a gangly and naive 15 year old named Hermie, played terrifically by Gary Grimes, who is caught up in a passion that will forever change his life and view ow women. He's overly infatuated with a young 22 year old Dorothy, p[layed sweetly by Jennifer O Neill, whose spouse is in the service and away fighing in the war.
The cast if silled with fun, memorable and solid performances throughout. The film's score composer won an Oscar for his efforts. Summer of '42 is a wonderful example of innocent romance on film. Both Grimes and O'Neil give solid and believable performances. An excellent early 70s fantasy romance film. Directed superbly
by Robert Mulligan, who keeps a sharp eye on the detail of the time
period and the pains and humor puberty and coming of age. Summer of 42
1971 DVD is an excellent drama and a film about the story of one teen coming
of age and discovering women, adult feelings, intimacy and romance.
