Captain Jeff MacDonald (played by Gary Cole), is a well-known surgeon at the US Army Base, Fort Bragg. MacDonald is a father of two daughters and seems to be a happily married man. Everything changes after MPs find him injured and his wife and daughters murdered upon entering their home. MacDonald claims that a group of hippies on drugs raided his house and attacked his family. Immediately a massive manhunt begins for the suspects. This search yields no leads or results. The investigators of the case start focusing on some inconsistencies in MacDonald's story and he becomes their prime suspect of the homicides of his own family.
