Originally
airing on the ABC network May 13, 1984. Jane Fonda delivers her amazing
and Emmy Award winning portrayal as Gerti Nevels in this Epic and
classic Made For TV movie. The movie uses the backdrop of the tough
times during World War II and the urbanization of America to tell this
fascinating story of one woman's battle to keep her family united
against the most difficult of circumstances. Gertie Nevels is the wife
of sharecropper in the state of Kentucky and she wants nothing more than
to own her own family farm in the future. Thrifty as she is Gertie
manages to stash away her savings from her husband Clovis, played by
Levon Helm, as she prepares to make her lifetime dream come true. That
is until her husband demands Gertie to come and join him in Detroit
where Clovis has gone to work for a factory to in order to help with the
war effort.
Gertie arrives with her children in arm and then
discovers that Clovis is settled into a tenement style block house and
is now living the life of a union worker. In short time the difficulties
of union worker and urban life; replete with horrible neighbors,
stifling schools and the miserable industrial landscape ultimately
threaten Gertie's family. In spite of Clovis' squander of money and his
tendency to blame his wife Gertie for all their troubles, she somehow
mangers to keep saving money. Gertie is a lifetime whittler and she
begins to sell her handmade wooden figures and dolls and when her
husband's union strikes, Gertie soon ends up supporting the entire
family. A fantastic television view experience. The drama and
storytelling are of a superior quality that is on par with the best
feature films. Fonda sinks genuine emotion and feeling into this
character.
Jane Fonda slips into this role like an old pair of
shoes, you don't even realize that it's her. Fonda delivers one of the
most powerful performances of her astute career. The story is
beautifully adapted from Harriet Arnow's novel by Hume Cronyn and Susan
Cooper. A wonderful achievement in Made for TV movies. The Dollmaker was
wonderfully directed by feature film and Television director Daniel
Petrie. Jane Fonda is simply astoundingly great in this role; possibly
the best acting role and performance of her long and varied career. The Dollmaker 1984 DVD remains one of the finest ever TV movies produced. The Dollmaker DVD 1984 earned Jane Fonda a well deserved Emmy for her performance. The Dollmaker DVD continues to be a wonderful period drama. Jane Fonda is magnificent in The Dollmaker DVD.
Jane Fonda easily gives one of if not THE finest performance of her long career as an actress in The Dollmaker DVD. The Dollmaker DVD is easily one of the best dramas made for TV from the 80s. The Dollmaker DVD is based on a true story and is a wonderful drama set in The Great Depression in America. This 1984 TV movie classic continues to be one of Jane Fonda's best career acting performances.
